Funeral services for Dewey C. James, Jr., 89, of Cleburne, Texas will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 30th, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church of Cleburne. The Rev. Dr. Robert Herzig will officiate; assisted by the Rev. Kenneth Coleman. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2017 at Rosser Funeral Home.
Dewey passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 in Cleburne. He was born in Cleburne, Texas on June 15, 1928, the son of Dewey C. James, Sr. and Mary Agnes Muldoon James. Dewey married Charlotte Ann Ryser on January 9, 1948.
After Charlottes passing, Dewey married Sharon Dean Hill on February 2, 1988. Dewey graduated from CHS, attended Baylor University where he played football, TCU, and several other colleges. He received CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter) designation. Dewey served as Assistant Secretary and Home Office Claims Manager- Employers Insurance of Texas- Employers Insurance Building, Dallas, Texas- home office. He served numerous business and professional affiliations including: Past Chairman- Claims Examining Committee, Texas Assigned Risk Pool (14 years);Past Chairman- Southwestern Insurance Information, W.C. Committee; Past Chairman- Workers Compensation Liaison Committee appointed by IAB of Texas (18 years); Past President- Board of Directors for TEECCO Credit Union of Dallas; Past Chairman- Workers Compensation Task Force, CPCU Study Group Committee, State of Texas; Past Chapter; Past Chairman- Texas W.C. Liquidation and Receivership Committee, State of Texas; Past Consultant- Texas Assigned Risk Pool; contracted with H.I.S. Hungarian International Services) to include workers compensation coverage for the country of Hungary, 1992-1994; represented American Association of Fire & Casualty Companies of Texas before the Texas Legislature on all matters pertaining to workers compensation, nine sessions (18 years).
Dewey proudly served in the U.S. Navy, and was involved in extensive leadership roles of community service, including: Johnson County Committee on Aging, Past Chairman of the Board at First United Methodist Church and the Executive Committee, and past Lay Leader, Past Chairman Greeters/ Ushers Committee, Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Chairman- Johnson County Advisory Board for Hill College; Johnson County United Way Board; President Citation Holder- Cleburne Kiwanis Club; Past District Secretary- Texas/Oklahoma District Kiwanis; Member Cleburne Tuesday Forum; Organizer of Pinnacle 50 Coffee Club; Past President- All Sports Jacket Booster Club; Chairman Cleburne Christian Business Club Holy Week-15 years, Chairman Emeritus.
Dewey received many honors including: First Distinguished Service Award for Chairman of Southwestern Information Service Workers Compensation Committee; Governors Commendation as President of the CPCU Workers Compensation Task Force, instrumental in implementing study groups recommendation resulting in the revision of the Workers Compensation Law. in the State of Texas; Chairman- Hill College, Johnson County Branch Campus, campaign resulting in College construction and opening in 1999; Dewey C. James, Jr., Scholarship, Hill College, given in honor by Mustang Foundation as a Founding Father of college; 1997 Citizen of the Year -Cleburne Chamber of Commerce; Distinguished Citizen by Boy Scouts; City of Cleburne, CISD, Johnson County, Hill College Declared February 17, 2017 Dewey C. James, Jr. Appreciation Day; the first recipient of the Cleburnes Times Review Outstanding Man of the Year; the Hill College Pillar of the Community award; and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 from Cleburne Chamber of Commerce.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Charlotte and second wife, Sharon.
Dewey is survived by his daughter, Cyndi Nutt of Dripping Springs; son, Guy James and wife, Candy, of Cleburne; grandchildren, J.R. Nutt and wife, Julie, Guy Neil James ll, and Gavin Cyrus James; and great granddaughter, Loretta Nutt.
